Decker's family moved to Louisiana in the age of 9. Decker then won a local talent competition for her performance of "I Would Like to Be the Sweetheart of a Cowboy" from Patsy Montana. The family of Decker moved from Louisiana into Georgia in the summer of 1995. She was beginning to compose songs and she was making frequent visits to Nashville. In search of an agreement, she met with record companies and music publishers. The songs she wrote were released to record companies as well as other artists by an agent from Big Yellow Dog Records agent at the age of 17. The demos of Decker were reviewed from Mercury Records president David Massey and then passed to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam Group affiliated label group L.A. Reid was able to sign Decker to an agreement. Her first album a self-titled effort under the moniker Jessie James arrived in August 2009. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a top single on the Top 40 Singles Charts was somewhat successful. Decker has always been a Country singer, yet the album was released and promoted was designed for a pop audience. Decker struggled to get more control over the music she put out after her earlier singles were not so well received. Decker's second album, announced by the title Daughter of a Gypsy and Sweet American Dreams by Mercury Records, was pulled because Mercury was disappointed by the performances of three of her singles on the country charts.
